Introduction

What Are League of Legends Skins?

Skins are purely cosmetic additions to your champion that change how they look, sound, and feel — with zero impact on gameplay or stats. They are one of Riot Games' primary revenue sources and have evolved from simple recolors to fully cinematic, multi-form experiences worth hundreds of dollars.

When you buy a League of Legends skin, you're changing your champion's 3D model, textures, splash art (the loading screen illustration), ability particle effects (VFX), ability sound effects (SFX), recall animation, and — at higher tiers — voice lines, emotes, animations, and even mid-game transformations.

As of Patch 26.13 in June 2026, League of Legends has over 2,083 skins across 170+ champions — and Riot releases new skins almost every single patch (roughly every two weeks). The skin ecosystem is enormous, and navigating it — knowing what to buy, when to buy it, and how to get things for free — is a genuine skill for any LoL player who cares about cosmetics.

Key fact: Skins are purely cosmetic — they do not affect your champion's damage, cooldowns, range, stats, or any gameplay mechanic. A player with a 3,250 RP Ultimate skin has exactly the same in-game power as a player using the free default champion model. The only exception is that some players argue that certain skin VFX make it slightly harder to read animations — known as "pay-to-lose" or "visual noise" concerns — though Riot has generally addressed the most egregious examples.

Skins are purchased with Riot Points (RP) — the game's premium currency bought with real money. Some skins are also obtainable for free through Hextech Crafting, Honor rewards, ranked rewards, or event passes. The highest-tier skins (Prestige, Mythic, Exalted, Transcendent) use separate currencies and systems detailed throughout this guide.

Tier System

All 9 League of Legends Skin Tiers — Fully Explained

Every LoL skin belongs to one of nine rarity tiers. The tier determines price, quality, features, and how you obtain the skin. Here's every tier ranked from most basic to most exclusive, with everything each one includes.

Common / Classic

Common Skins

390 RP – 975 RP (~$3–$8)

The most basic and affordable skins in League of Legends. These are mostly older releases — simple recolors, minor model tweaks, or early-era skins from 2009–2013 when the game had a much smaller production budget. You'll rarely see new skins released at this tier today.

  • New model/texture (sometimes minor)
  • New splash art
  • No new VFX or SFX
  • No new animations or voice lines

Examples: Classic Alistar (390 RP), Riot Girl Tristana (free), Goth Annie (390 RP), White Mage Veigar, Assassin Master Yi

Epic

Epic Skins

1,350 RP (~$10)

The bread-and-butter of League of Legends cosmetics. The vast majority of modern skin releases are Epic tier. At 1,350 RP you get a completely reimagined champion with new VFX, SFX, and recall — making these the most popular and commonly purchased skins in the game.

  • Completely new 3D model & textures
  • New splash art & loading screen
  • New ability particle effects (VFX)
  • New ability sound effects (SFX)
  • New recall animation

Examples: Arcane Jinx, Star Guardian Ahri, Blood Moon Zed, Dark Star Thresh, PROJECT: Fiora, Pulsefire Caitlyn

Legendary

Legendary Skins

1,820 RP (~$14)

The premium tier available for direct RP purchase. Legendary skins go beyond Epic by adding entirely new voice lines (or voice filters), new emotes, and more expressive animations — making the champion feel like a genuinely different character. There are currently over 103 Legendary skins in the game.

  • Everything in Epic, plus:
  • New custom voice lines or voice filter
  • New emote animations
  • Enhanced idle & movement animations
  • More elaborate particle systems

Examples: Elementalist Lux, Dawnbringer Soraka, Dark Cosmic Jhin, Spirit Blossom Ahri, Mecha Kingdoms Draven, Immortal Journey Sona

Ultimate

Ultimate Skins

3,250 RP (~$25)

The pinnacle of skins purchasable with RP. Ultimate skins completely reimagine and reconceptualize a champion — adding dynamic in-game transformations, multiple forms that evolve during a match, unique gameplay mechanics baked into the skin, and cinematic-level production quality. There are only 7 Ultimate skins ever made. Riot has not released a new one since 2023.

  • Everything in Legendary, plus:
  • Multiple in-game forms or evolutions
  • Champion transforms during gameplay
  • Unique mechanics tied to the skin
  • Massive unique voice-over
  • Exclusive loading screen portrait

Pulsefire Ezreal, Spirit Guard Udyr, DJ Sona, Elementalist Lux, Gun Goddess Miss Fortune, K/DA ALL OUT Seraphine, Soul Fighter Samira

Prestige

Prestige Skins

150 Mythic Essence (ME) or Battle Pass

Premium, limited-edition cosmetics that cannot be purchased with RP. Prestige skins are gold-and-white enhanced versions of popular Epic or Legendary skins, featuring unique borders, upgraded effects, and exclusive splash art. They signal dedication and grind to other players.

  • Enhanced gold & white visual treatment

Mythic

Mythic Skins

100–125 Mythic Essence (ME)

Exclusive skins that rotate through the Mythic Shop and can only be obtained with Mythic Essence — never directly purchased for RP. Mythic skins are comparable to Epic or Legendary quality but carry the prestige of limited acquisition. The game has over 51 Mythic skins total.

  • Epic or Legendary quality visuals
  • Exclusive to the Mythic Shop
  • Cost 100 ME on debut, 125 ME on return
  • Cannot be purchased with RP
  • Obtainable via Sanctum or Hextech Chests

Exalted

Exalted Skins

Up to 32,000 RP equivalent (~$250)

Introduced in late 2024, Exalted skins are ultra-luxury cosmetics obtained exclusively through The Sanctum — Riot's gacha system. Using Ancient Sparks (purchased at 400 RP each), you have a 0.5% drop chance per pull, with a hard pity at 80 pulls. They are cinematically comparable to Ultimate skins in quality. Viego (Revenant Reign) is the latest.

  • Ultimate-level visual production quality
  • Exclusive to The Sanctum (gacha)
  • 0.5% drop rate, pity at 80 pulls
  • Cannot be purchased directly
  • Multi-form & evolving in-game

Arcane Fractured Jinx (first Exalted), Revenant Reign Viego (latest), Exalted Syndra

Transcendent

Transcendent Skins

~59,260 RP (~$450–500)

The absolute pinnacle of League of Legends cosmetics. Currently only two Transcendent skins exist, both part of the Hall of Legends program honoring esports legends. The Signature Immortalized Legend Ahri (for Faker) and Signature Immortalized Legend Kai'Sa (for Uzi) are the most expensive skins ever released at approximately $450–$500 each.

  • Highest tier in the entire game
  • Honors Hall of Legends inductees
  • Unprecedented production quality
  • Unique signature & exclusive features
  • Not available in any loot or reroll pool

Signature Immortalized Legend Ahri (Faker, 2024), Signature Immortalized Legend Kai'Sa (Uzi, 2025)

Victorious / Honor

Victorious & Honor Skins

Free — Earned Through Play

Victorious skins are awarded free to players who earn 15 ranked wins in a single Season (~4 months) while maintaining Honor Level 3 or higher. They are limited to that season and mark your competitive achievement. Championship skins are released annually during Worlds. Both types are the most meaningful free cosmetics in the game.

  • Free — no RP required
  • Requires 15 ranked wins per season
  • Must be Honor Level 3+
  • Season 2 2026 Victorious skin: Rengar
  • Cannot be obtained after the season ends

All 7 Ultimate Skins

Every Ultimate Skin in League of Legends — Fully Ranked

There are exactly 7 Ultimate skins (3,250 RP each). Riot has not released a new one since Soul Fighter Samira in July 2023, with focus shifting to the Exalted tier. Here is every Ultimate skin with a full review and ranking.

Rank Skin Champion Release Unique Feature Verdict
S+ Elementalist Lux Lux 2016 10 elemental forms (Fire, Ice, Water, Wind, Nature, Light, Dark, Storm, Magma, Mystic) switchable in the pre-game lobby. The most content-rich skin ever made. Essential for any Lux main. The gold standard of Ultimate skins.
S K/DA ALL OUT Seraphine Seraphine 2020 Three forms (Indie → Rising Star → Superstar) that upgrade as Seraphine levels up to 6, 11, and in late game. Most narrative-driven skin. Deeply tied to Seraphine's lore. Stunning at all three stages. Exceptional value.
S DJ Sona Sona 2015 Three musical modes (Concussive, Ethereal, Kinetic) each with different themes. Your entire team hears the custom music. A genuinely unique team-experience skin. Still incredible 10 years later. Arguably the most innovative skin concept ever.
A+ Soul Fighter Samira Samira 2023 Fighting game aesthetic with screen-filling VFX, custom font for damage numbers, combo counter styling. The newest Ultimate skin — cinematic and stylish. Excellent visual design but the "unique mechanic" (custom damage font) felt underwhelming for an Ultimate. Still superb.
A Gun Goddess Miss Fortune Miss Fortune 2018 Four weapon forms: Scarlet Fair (red), Zero Hour (cyberpunk), Starswarm (galactic), Prototype (ghost). Selected before match, cannot be changed in-game. Great variety but the inability to switch in-game hurt it. Still a visual masterpiece.
A Pulsefire Ezreal Ezreal 2012 The first Ultimate skin ever. Ezreal's armor evolves as he levels from 1 to 18. Defines the evolution mechanic that later Ultimates built on. Shows its age visually but historically iconic. Worth buying for the legacy alone.
A- Spirit Guard Udyr Udyr 2013 Four animal spirit forms (Tiger, Turtle, Bear, Phoenix) each with distinct aesthetics that evolve across the game. Updated in the 2022 Udyr VGU. Updated with the Udyr rework. Visually clean but Udyr's niche pool limits its appeal.

Always check what's in rotation before spending your Mythic Essence.

Gacha Tier

Exalted Skins — League of Legends' Highest Gacha Tier

Introduced in late 2024, Exalted skins are Riot's most controversial and most visually impressive skin tier — obtained through The Sanctum, League's gacha pull system using Ancient Sparks.

How The Sanctum Works

The Sanctum is League's gacha system. You purchase Ancient Sparks at 400 RP each (~$3). Each pull into the Exalted Banner gives a 0.5% drop rate for the Exalted skin. Pity kicks in at 80 pulls — guaranteeing the Exalted skin. At pity price (80 × 400 RP = 32,000 RP), that's equivalent to approximately $250 USD. Statistically, you have a 33% chance of hitting the skin before the 80-pull pity, but most players hit pity or close to it.

Exalted Skin Champion Release Key Feature
Arcane Fractured Jinx Jinx Late 2024 First Exalted skin ever. Directly tied to Arcane Season 2 story. Multiple in-game transformations, cinematic animations, and production that rivals the show itself.
Revenant Reign Viego Viego 2026 The newest Exalted skin. Dark undead monarch aesthetic. Multi-form evolution as Viego controls enemy champions.
Exalted Syndra Syndra 2025 Cosmic dark sorceress with enormous sphere VFX. Widely praised for matching Syndra's in-lore power fantasy.
Community debate: Exalted skins are controversial. Many players feel the gacha pricing model is predatory — potentially costing $250 for a single skin. Riot positions them as "hyper-exclusive" collectibles for the most dedicated fans. If you're considering pulling on an Exalted skin, set a hard budget limit before you start. The 0.5% drop rate is extremely low, and many players hit pity (or close to it).

How to Get Free Skins in League of Legends 2026

You don't always need to spend RP to get skins. Here are every legitimate method to earn skins for free in 2026 — ranked by how reliable they are.

🏆

Victorious Skin (Best Free Skin)

Earn 15 ranked wins in a single Season (~4 months) while at Honor Level 3 or higher. The Victorious skin is awarded for free after the season ends. Season 2 2026 Victorious skin is Rengar. This is the most reliable free skin — it just requires playing ranked consistently.

📦

Battle Pass Free Track

Every Act's Battle Pass has a free track that gives 8 Hextech Chests. These chests contain skin shards, champion shards, and occasionally Mythic Essence. Combine 3 skin shards to roll a random skin permanent. The free track alone can net you 2–3 free skins per Act if you're active.

🎖️

Honor Level 5 Capsules

Reach Honor Level 5 each season to receive Honor capsules that contain exclusive skin shards and chromas. Getting there requires consistent positive behavior and sportsmanship. The Honor system also awards the Grey Warwick and Medieval Twitch skins from Level 5 token — still free and rare.

🛍️

Your Shop Discounts (Up to 70% off)

Not technically free, but Your Shop offers up to 70% off on 6 personalized skins based on your champion history. A 1,350 RP skin can drop to as low as 405 RP. Your Shop returns 4–6 times per year. Always check it before buying a skin at full price — your target skin might be discounted.

🎁

Mystery Gifts From Friends

Friends can send you Mystery Gifts — a random skin you don't own (weighted toward champions you own). If you have generous friends who play LoL, this can net you free skins. You can also gift friends in return during special occasions.

🔮

Sanctum B-Tier Pulls

The Sanctum's B-Tier rewards Mythic Essence (5, 10, 25, 50, 100 ME per pull) which accumulates toward Prestige or Mythic skins. Hextech Chests have a 3.6% drop chance for 10 ME. Over time, passive play can net enough ME for Mythic Shop purchases — effectively free if you're patient.

Currency Guide

Mythic Essence (ME) — Complete Earning & Spending Guide

Mythic Essence is the premium currency used to buy Prestige skins (150 ME), Mythic skins (100–125 ME), chromas (35 ME), and other Mythic Shop content. Here's how to earn it efficiently.

Source ME Earned Notes
Sanctum B-Tier pulls 5–100 ME per pull Main source. B-Tier rewards ME at 5, 10, 25, 50, 100 increments. Best passive ME source.
Paid Battle Pass (Level 32) 25 ME One-time per Act on the paid track. Always worth grabbing if you buy the pass.
Hextech Chests 10 ME (3.6% chance) Low probability but adds up over time. Free Hextech Chests from Battle Pass free track.
Account leveling (150+) 10 ME per 50 levels Every 50 account levels past 150 gives 10 ME. Slow but free.
Sanctum A/S-Tier completion ME when all rewards exhausted After clearing all A-Tier and S-Tier rewards, pulls reward ME instead.
Event orbs Variable Some event orbs and milestone rewards include ME. Check each event's rewards track.
ME spending priority: If you're saving ME, prioritize like this — (1) New Prestige skins on debut (150 ME) since they may not return for months, (2) Mythic skins you specifically want (100 ME on debut, 125 ME on return), (3) Returning Prestige skins (150 ME) only if they're your favorites. Never spend ME on Chromas unless you've already secured the skins you want.

Skin Buying Tips — How to Get the Best Value in LoL 2026

Buying skins efficiently means knowing when to buy, what to avoid, and how to stretch every RP. Here are the most important tips from experienced LoL skin collectors.

TIP 01

Always Wait for Your Shop

Your Shop returns 4–6 times per year and offers up to 70% off skins based on your champion history. If you're eyeing a 1,350 RP skin, wait — you might get it for 405–810 RP. Set a reminder when Your Shop is active (typically announced in patch notes) and check it first every cycle.

TIP 02

Buy Prestige on Debut

Prestige skins cost 150 ME when new but return at the same price. However, new Prestige skins stay in the shop longer on debut — and certain Prestige skins might not return for 6–12 months. If you love a new Prestige skin, buy it on debut rather than waiting for a return that might not come quickly.

TIP 03

Test Skins Before Buying

Use the in-game Skin Preview feature on any champion select screen to see every skin's model, VFX, and animations before purchasing. For high-tier skins, also watch YouTube reviews showing all animations and sounds. Never buy a Legendary or Ultimate skin without previewing it fully first.

TIP 04

Buy RP in Bulk During Bonus Events

Riot occasionally runs bonus RP promotions where you receive extra RP for purchases. Watch for these — buying the largest RP bundle during a bonus event is the most cost-efficient way to stock up. The 10,200 RP bundle always gives the best value per dollar regardless of promotions.

TIP 05

Never Buy Skins for Champions You Just Started

Only buy skins for champions you have 50+ games on. Many players buy a skin on a champion they're excited about, then stop playing them within 2 weeks. Prioritize skins for your main champions — the ones you play every session — for maximum value.

TIP 06

Check Skin Monday Sales Regularly

A selection of non-Legendary/Ultimate skins go on sale every Monday at noon PT (typically 50–60% off). Additionally, Early Sales happen within 4–6 months of a skin's release — discounting Epic skins from 1,350 RP to 975 RP and Legendary from 1,820 RP to 1,350 RP. Watch the client or external sale trackers.

TIP 07

Avoid Impulse Buys on Exalted Skins

Exalted skins through The Sanctum can cost $250+ to hit pity. If you want an Exalted skin, decide your maximum budget in advance and stick to it. The gacha system is designed to encourage spending past your limit. Set a hard cap — ideally 40 Ancient Sparks (since you have ~18% chance of hitting before pity) and walk away if you don't hit it.

TIP 08

Mythic Shop Rotation Tracking

Track the Mythic Shop rotation on community sites like LoLDB or the official client. ME is rare enough that you want to spend it on skins you'll actually use. The shop rotates bi-weekly for Mythic Skins and Prestige skins — knowing when your target skin will be available prevents spending ME impulsively on something you care less about.

TIP 09

ARAM Wardrobe (New 2026)

A new 2026 feature being tested: ARAM Wardrobe (1,350 RP for 30 days) gives access to every Epic skin and below released before 2026 in ARAM and ARAM: Mayhem. If you play a lot of ARAM, this is outstanding value — try hundreds of skins without owning them individually.

Frequently Asked

League of Legends Skins — FAQ

The most common questions about LoL skins, answered comprehensively.

How many skins are in League of Legends in 2026?
As of Patch 26.13 in June 2026, there are over 2,083 skins in League of Legends, not including Chromas (which add color variants to existing skins). Riot releases new skins almost every patch (every 2 weeks), so this number grows continuously. Lux and Miss Fortune are tied for most skins with 22 each.
What is the best skin in League of Legends?
Elementalist Lux is widely considered the best skin ever made. At 3,250 RP (Ultimate tier), it offers 10 elemental forms you can switch in the pre-game lobby — Fire, Ice, Water, Wind, Nature, Light, Dark, Storm, Magma, and Mystic — each with completely unique models, VFX, and SFX. No other skin offers this level of content variety. Runner-up: K/DA ALL OUT Seraphine for narrative depth, and Dark Cosmic Jhin for Legendary tier value.
What is the most expensive skin in League of Legends?
The most expensive skin ever released is the Signature Immortalized Legend Ahri (Faker) — a Transcendent skin honoring T1's legendary midlaner at approximately $450–500 USD (59,260 RP bundle). If we count Exalted skins at pity price, those can cost approximately $250. For directly purchasable RP skins, Ultimate skins at 3,250 RP (~$25) are the ceiling.
Can you get League of Legends skins for free?
Yes, there are multiple ways to get free skins: (1) Victorious skin — earn 15 ranked wins in a Season at Honor 3+; (2) Battle Pass free track gives Hextech Chests with skin shards; (3) Honor Level 5 capsules; (4) Rerolling 3 skin shards in the loot tab; (5) Mystery Gifts from friends. Free skins are limited but consistent for active players.
Do skins give any gameplay advantage in LoL?
No. All League of Legends skins are purely cosmetic — they do not affect any gameplay stats including damage, cooldowns, range, movement speed, or any other mechanic. A player with a 3,250 RP Ultimate skin has exactly the same in-game power as a player using the default champion model. Riot enforces this strictly.
What are Chromas and are they worth buying?
Chromas are color variants of existing skins — they recolor the model and sometimes tweak textures, but don't add new VFX, SFX, or animations. Single Chromas cost 290 RP, and bundles (containing multiple colors) cost more. They are worth it if you love a skin and want a specific color palette but find the default color underwhelming. During the Essence Emporium, select Chromas can be bought for Blue Essence at reduced ME prices (195 ME during sales).
What is the difference between Mythic and Legendary skins?
Legendary skins cost 1,820 RP and are purchasable directly with RP. They feature new voice lines, emotes, and enhanced animations on top of Epic-tier visuals. Mythic skins cannot be purchased with RP at all — they require Mythic Essence earned through gameplay and are obtained through the Mythic Shop. Mythic skins can be comparable to Epic or Legendary quality, but their exclusivity (limited acquisition method) is the defining characteristic.
How does The Sanctum / Exalted skin system work?
The Sanctum is League's gacha system introduced in 2024. You purchase Ancient Sparks at 400 RP (~$3) each. Each pull into the Exalted Banner has a 0.5% drop chance for the Exalted skin, with a hard pity at 80 pulls (meaning you are guaranteed the skin by pull 80). At full pity, this costs 32,000 RP (~$250). The Sanctum also has B-Tier, A-Tier, and S-Tier rewards beyond just Exalted skins, including Mythic Essence, icons, emotes, and skin shards.
Can you refund skins in League of Legends?
Yes, with limitations. Refunds are possible if the skin was purchased with RP (not earned) and the refund is requested within 14 days of purchase. Each account gets 3 lifetime refund tokens for direct RP purchases. Skins purchased through Hextech Crafting, Prestige, or Mythic Shop cannot be refunded. Use refund tokens carefully — you get very few of them.
What upcoming skins are confirmed for 2026?
Confirmed 2026 upcoming skins include: High Noon Locke & Akshan (Patch 26.13, June 24), Broken Covenant Jhin/Aurora/Shen (Patch 26.13 MSI skins), T1 Worlds 2025 championship skins (July), Victorious Rengar (Season 2 ranked reward), Revenant Reign Viego Exalted skin, and Mythic Variants for Aurelion Sol and Master Yi. The Sinful Shores and Petals of Spring skin lines launched earlier in 2026.
