Aatrox
The Darkin Blade
Once a proud Ascended defender of Shurima, now a corrupted Darkin imprisoned within his own sword — Aatrox seeks nothing less than the obliteration of all creation, so he can finally know death.
Aatrox Overview
A self-healing juggernaut who dominates top lane through sustained AoE damage and an undying passive — the stronger he fights, the harder he becomes to kill.
Aatrox is a juggernaut fighter whose entire identity revolves around a single mechanic: sweetspot hit zones on his Q — The Darkin Blade. Land the outer edge of each swing, and he deals 75% bonus damage and knocks enemies airborne. Miss it, and he's significantly weaker. Mastering his Q positioning is the entire skillset of Aatrox.
His Deathbringer Stance passive empowers periodic basic attacks to deal max-health bonus magic damage and heal him — scaling off target health, making him naturally strong against tanks. His Umbral Dash (E) gives him passive healing on every ability hit even when not activated, making him one of the most self-sustaining champions in the top lane. Infernal Chains (W) pulls enemies to the center of an impact zone if they fail to walk out — a critical setup tool for landing Q sweetspots.
His ultimate, World Ender, transforms him into his true demonic form — granting massive bonus attack damage, amplified healing, and movement speed. If he earns a takedown during it, the duration fully refreshes, allowing Aatrox to teamfight indefinitely if ahead. As of Patch 26.15 (July 2026), he is A/S tier in top lane after back-to-back buffs in Patches 26.2 and 26.12.
Abilities
Full breakdown with exact values as of Patch 26.15. The sweetspot hit zone on Q is everything — learn it first.

Deathbringer Stance
Periodically, Aatrox's next basic attack gains +50 bonus range and deals bonus magic damage equal to 4%–10% of the target's maximum health (based on level), capped at 100–320 against monsters. The bonus damage applies lifesteal — Aatrox heals for 100% of the post-mitigation bonus damage dealt (25% against minions).
Whenever Aatrox hits at least one enemy champion or large monster with a basic attack or ability, Deathbringer Stance's cooldown is reduced by 2 seconds — doubled to 4 seconds if he hits an enemy champion with the Sweetspot of The Darkin Blade. This rewards aggressive sweetspot play with dramatically more passive uptime.

The Darkin Blade
Aatrox slams his greatsword down in a three-cast sequence, each cast with a different area of effect: a wide downward slam, a lateral swing, and a vertical overhead smash. Between each cast, Aatrox can move freely. Each slam deals physical damage to all enemies in the area — with a 1-second static cooldown between casts.
The outer edge of each swing is the Sweetspot. Hitting an enemy in the Sweetspot briefly knocks them airborne and deals 75% additional damage on top of the base damage — the most impactful single mechanic in Aatrox's kit. After the full sequence, the cooldown begins. Aatrox can also use Umbral Dash (E) during Q casts to reposition for better sweetspot angles.

Infernal Chains
Aatrox smashes the ground, dealing physical damage to the first enemy hit and slowing them by 25% for 1.5 seconds. If the target is a champion or large monster, a chain tethers to them — they must exit the impact area within 1.5 seconds, or they are dragged to the center and take the damage again.
This pull creates a crucial setup for Q sweetspots — an enemy dragged to the center of Infernal Chains is perfectly positioned for the edge of a follow-up Darkin Blade. In teamfights, W → Q sweetspot → passive auto is Aatrox's core trade combo.

Umbral Dash
Passive: Aatrox heals for a percentage of all physical damage dealt to champions — granting constant sustain on every auto attack and ability hit, making long trades heavily favor him. During World Ender (R), this healing is significantly amplified.
Active: Aatrox dashes in the target direction. This dash can be activated during The Darkin Blade (Q) casts, allowing him to reposition mid-swing for better sweetspot angles, dodge incoming skillshots, or chase escaping enemies. Aatrox can hold up to 2 charges of Umbral Dash at higher ranks.

World Ender
Aatrox unleashes his true demonic form, fearing nearby minions and buffing himself for 10 seconds with: bonus attack damage, massively amplified healing (all his healing sources increase by the amplification percent), and bonus movement speed that decays over the duration.
If Aatrox scores a takedown during World Ender, the entire duration resets — allowing him to fight indefinitely through an entire teamfight if he keeps getting kills or assists. This makes him exponentially more dangerous the more enemies cluster against him. Additionally, if Aatrox would die during World Ender, he briefly enters a revive state before returning to combat with recovered health.

Max Q first, then E, then W
Landing Sweetspots is the only skill that matters. In every trade, your goal is to position each Q swing so the enemy lands in the outer edge. Short trades favor Aatrox heavily once you've landed a sweetspot knockup — follow with passive auto, E dash to close, second Q sweetspot.
W setup: Use Infernal Chains to pull an enemy to the center of its AoE — they're perfectly placed for the sweetspot edge of your follow-up Q. W → (Q sweetspot) is the foundation of every all-in.
World Ender timing: Don't open with R. Engage with W → Q, get the chain pull knockup, land an E, then activate R when you're committed to the fight. This way R's healing amp protects you through the fight rather than wasting early duration on the approach.
Revive: If World Ender's revive triggers, you come back with ~30% health. Use the brief window to E dash away, land a final Q sweetspot, and either finish or disengage. Don't panic and throw it.
Lore
From Shurima's greatest defender to Runeterra's most fearsome apocalypse.
Long before the age of mortals, Aatrox was one of the Ascended — godlike warriors created by the ancient Shuriman civilization to defend against the Void. Unlike other Ascended who were transformed by the sun disc into noble beings, Aatrox was shaped entirely for war. He fought alongside his brethren to defend Runeterra across countless battles, sacrificing everything for a civilization that barely acknowledged his existence.
The war against the Void was won — but the victory was hollow. The Ascended had sacrificed their humanity in service of mortals who forgot them almost immediately. Aatrox watched as his brethren fell into despair, madness, or vanity. He himself became increasingly convinced that existence itself was meaningless — that creation was a cycle of suffering with no redemption. He began waging war not to defend anything, but to seek an enemy that could finally kill him.
The mortal sorcerers of a later age, unable to kill the Darkin directly, found another solution: they imprisoned each Darkin's soul inside their own weapon. For Aatrox, this meant centuries of torment locked inside his greatsword — conscious but unable to act, unable to die, existing in eternal screaming madness. He was sealed away, passed between foolish mortals who thought they could wield him, only to be corrupted and consumed by his hunger.
Now free once more, Aatrox walks Runeterra in a body of stolen flesh — the remnants of those he has consumed built into a brutal approximation of his former form. He seeks not power or conquest, but oblivion. If the universe cannot provide him the death he craves, he will tear it apart until something inside it can.
His story intersects with other Darkin — Rhaast (Kayn's scythe) and Varus — and with the Aspects and mortals who sealed them. The Darkin arc is one of League's most tragic: warriors who saved the world and were repaid with eternal imprisonment.
