Briar

Unleashed from the Black Rose

A failed experiment by the Black Rose whose uncontrollable bloodlust required a special pillory to focus her frenzied mind — now free, following only her hunger for knowledge and blood.

Fighter Assassin Jungle No HP Regen
001 — Champion File · Patch 26.15

Briar Overview

A self-healing dive assassin-fighter who trades HP Regen for an insatiable bleed-and-lifesteal combat loop — released September 2023, dominant in the 2026 jungle meta.

Briar is one of League's most mechanically unique champions — a Fighter/Assassin jungler who has no base HP regeneration whatsoever. Instead, she sustains entirely through her Crimson Curse passive, which makes every ability and attack apply a stacking bleed that heals her for a portion of the damage dealt. Her healing amplifies based on her missing health — the lower she gets, the more she heals, creating an extremely volatile but self-correcting combat loop.

Her kit revolves around Blood Frenzy, a mode she enters after using her W that makes her relentlessly pursue the nearest enemy, gaining massive attack speed and AoE damage. While frenzied she has no ability to back off — Briar's greatest strength and greatest weakness is the same thing: once the bloodlust takes over, she commits completely. Her E, Chilling Scream, is the rare tool that can temporarily suppress the frenzy, letting her control her positioning mid-fight.

In 2026 on Patch 26.15, Briar holds an S+ tier ranking in Jungle with a 53.21% win rate in Emerald+ — one of the highest of any jungle champion in the current meta. Her combination of reliable gank threat via Head Rush, insane objective-taking speed through Blood Frenzy, and the global engagement tool of Certain Death makes her a dominant force in solo queue.

Abilities

Full ability breakdown with exact numbers current as of Patch 26.15 (July 2026). Briar's kit is built around Blood Frenzy — commit, bleed, heal, repeat.

Crimson Curse
PASSIVE

Crimson Curse

Innate · Bleed + Lifesteal · No HP Regen

No Regeneration: Briar has zero base health regeneration and gains none from items. She sustains exclusively through the lifesteal component of this passive.

Crimson Curse: Briar's basic attacks and abilities apply a bleed to enemies for 5 seconds, refreshing on reapplication and stacking up to 5 times (as of Patch 26.15 — reduced from 7 in earlier patches). The bleed deals 10–50 (based on level) + 50% bonus AD total physical damage over the duration. Each additional stack beyond the first deals 25% of the base damage.

Briar is healed for a portion of all bleed damage dealt. Her healing amplifier scales from 0% to 35% based on missing health — the lower she falls, the more she heals from each bleed tick, making her extremely difficult to finish in extended trades.

Core Identity
Never build HP Regen items on Briar — it provides zero benefit. Instead lean into lifesteal and ability haste. The passive's missing-health healing means Briar actually becomes harder to kill as she gets lower, not easier. Enemy burst that takes her to 20% HP is often the moment she starts healing faster than they can deal damage.
Head Rush
Q

Head Rush

Active · Targeted Leap · Stun + Armor Shred

Briar leaps to a target unit — champion, ward, or minion — hitting them with the Heel Wheel (part of her pillory), stunning them for 0.85 seconds and dealing physical damage. The impact also reduces the target's armor and magic resistance by 10–20% for 5 seconds.

Head Rush is Briar's primary gap-closer and gank tool. It can target wards and minions, making it flexible for closing into range before committing. During Blood Frenzy and Certain Death, Head Rush can also be cast to reposition mid-frenzy, and Certain Death can be cast during the dash.

Toggle · AoE Frenzy + Empowered Bite

Blood Frenzy (Activate): Briar leaps forward and shatters her pillory, entering Blood Frenzy. She relentlessly pursues the nearest enemy (prioritizing champions), gaining attack speed, movement speed, and AoE splash damage on all her attacks. She cannot stop or change targets voluntarily — the frenzy controls her.

Snack Attack (Reactivate during Frenzy): Briar empowers her next basic attack within 5 seconds to take a bite out of the target — gaining 50 bonus range, dealing bonus physical damage based on the target's missing health, and healing herself for 5% of her maximum HP. This is her primary healing trigger in extended fights and jungle clears.

Blood Frenzy Warning
Once activated, Briar cannot control which enemy she attacks — she will chase the nearest target automatically. Use E (Chilling Scream) to briefly suppress the frenzy and reposition before re-engaging. Never activate W near minions if your target is across the minion wave — she will path to the minion instead.

Chilling Scream

Active · Channel + Knockback · Frenzy Suppression

Briar suppresses her Blood Frenzy, channeling to wind up a scream. While charging, she gains a damage reduction shield and slows nearby enemies. Upon releasing (or after max charge), she unleashes a powerful scream that deals magic damage and knocks back all enemies in front of her. Fully charged releases a stronger knockback.

Chilling Scream is Briar's only form of deliberate crowd control targeting — and her only way to exit Blood Frenzy mid-fight. Mastering when to channel it is the core skill expression of Briar: too early and you lose DPS; too late and the frenzy carries you into a bad position.

ULTIMATE

Certain Death

Active · Global Skillshot · Mark + Hematomania

Briar kicks her pillory's hemolith gemstone a large distance toward the target direction, marking the first enemy champion it hits and revealing them. If a target is hit, Briar destroys her pillory and dashes directly to them — crossing any terrain in the process.

Upon arrival, she creates an explosion dealing magic damage to the marked champion and enemies around them, and fears all non-marked enemies away. Briar then enters Hematomania — an extreme state where she gains all Blood Frenzy effects plus bonus armor, magic resistance, lifesteal, and additional movement speed. Hematomania lasts until she or the marked target dies — one of them is not leaving this fight.

Certain Death — Risk & Reward
This ultimate is a full commit. Once the gem lands, Briar dashes across the entire map with no cancel. If the target dies before she arrives, the ultimate fails. If she arrives on a target her team can't follow up on, she fights alone in Hematomania. Never use R without vision of the target's surroundings — enemies off-screen when you cast can be standing between you and the target.

Playstyle Notes — Patch 26.15

Early jungle: Start Red Buff — the bleed sustain lets you path without Smite HP gating. Stack bleeds on each camp by activating W on large monsters, then using Snack Attack to heal back up immediately. You should full clear at healthy HP without using Smite at all — save it for Scuttler or ganks.

Ganking: Q into the target for the stun and armor shred, then immediately W into Blood Frenzy. The shred amplifies everything your laners deal simultaneously. If the target runs, use E to cancel the frenzy, reposition, and re-engage with Q if it's off cooldown.

Teamfights: Enter on the highest-priority target using Q into W. Use Snack Attack when below 50% HP for the max-missing-health damage and heal. Channel E only when you need to knock enemies off yourself or reposition mid-fight — it's also your escape from a losing situation by knocking the enemy away.

R usage: Best used as a finisher on a fleeing low-HP carry, or as a surprise engage on an isolated target across the map. Never use it into a group without your team ready to follow.

005 — Story

Lore

A failed experiment, an unbreakable hunger — Briar's origins in the Black Rose of Noxus.

Briar is a failed experiment by the Black Rose — a secretive and dangerous Noxian organization that wields magic and influence in the shadows of the empire. Created through means that have never been fully disclosed, Briar's uncontrollable bloodlust proved impossible to contain through conventional methods.

The Black Rose constructed a special pillory — a restraining device fitted around her head — designed to focus her frenzied mind by partially inhibiting her senses. For years, Briar lived in confinement, her hunger both literal and metaphorical, always present, always pressing against the restraints that held it in check.

"Ohhh, I've been so hungry. Let me — just a taste." — Briar

Eventually — inevitably — she broke free. The pillory shattered, and the living weapon the Black Rose had created was suddenly answerable to no one. Rather than terror or despair, Briar greeted her freedom with something between excitement and bewilderment. The world outside her confinement was enormous, full of new smells, new sounds, and most importantly: new things to hunt.

Briar's personality is a striking contradiction — curious and childlike in her wonder at the world, yet capable of terrifying single-minded violence the moment bloodlust takes over. She genuinely wants to understand herself and others, but the hunger always wins in the end, and she knows it. Her in-game voice lines oscillate between cheerful observation and apologetic carnage.

Her connection to the Black Rose and Noxus leaves open significant lore threads — who created her, why, and whether the Black Rose will attempt to recapture their escaped weapon. These questions remain unanswered in 2026 canon, suggesting Briar's story is still being written.

Trivia

Design notes, references and mechanical details about Briar.

01
Briar is the only champion in League of Legends with zero base HP regeneration — including zero growth per level and zero from items. This was a deliberate design decision to make her entirely dependent on her passive bleed lifesteal for sustain, creating a fundamentally different risk profile from any other champion.
02
She was referred to as the "Hangry" champion during development — a portmanteau of Hungry and Angry — by Riot designer Riot Lexical, who teased her thematic at the start of 2023 before the full reveal.
03
Briar's pillory — the restraining device on her head — is not just visual flavour. It is a central mechanical element: Chilling Scream uses its hemolith gem as a projectile, and Certain Death sees her literally destroy it, representing the moment she fully unleashes with no remaining restraint.
04
The Firecracker Briar skin (2024) represents her as a Jiangshi — a Chinese folklore zombie that hops with arms outstretched and feeds on life force. This is a direct thematic parallel to Briar's bloodlust and lifesteal identity.
05
Battle Academia Briar (January 2026, Patch 26.02) features 8 chroma variants and fully reworked animations and sounds — one of the most elaborate non-Legendary skins released in the 2026 season, complementing the Battle Academia universe with her chaotic energy.
06
The maximum Crimson Curse bleed stacks were reduced from 9 → 7 → 5 across multiple patches since release, each reduction tightening her burst potential while preserving the sustained bleed identity.
07
Briar's voice lines include significant fourth-wall awareness about her hunger — she frequently comments on the taste of enemies mid-fight and apologizes after kills in a child-like manner, creating one of League's most tonally unique character voices.
08
In Hematomania (Certain Death state), Briar cannot be stopped from chasing the marked target — not by walls, not by dashes, not by summoner spells. She will destroy any terrain between herself and the prey, making Certain Death one of the most inescapable ultimate engages in League.

008 — Frequently Asked

Briar FAQ

Common questions about Briar's mechanics, build and lore — 2026 edition.

Why does Briar have no HP regeneration?
Briar's Crimson Curse passive fully replaces HP regeneration with a bleed-based lifesteal system. Every bleed stack she applies heals her for a portion of the damage — scaling up to 35% of her missing health at low HP. This means she sustains exclusively through combat, making her one of the most combat-dependent champions in League. Building HP Regen items provides zero benefit to Briar.
Is Briar good in 2026? What's her current tier?
Yes — Briar is S+ tier in Jungle as of Patch 26.15 (July 2026) with a 53.21% win rate in Emerald+, ranking 2nd of 82 jungle champions. Recent buffs to her Q armor shred and passive healing cap have pushed her into one of the dominant positions in the current meta. She is particularly strong in games that go past 25 minutes where her bleed stacking and healing amplifier reach peak effectiveness.
How do you stop Briar during Blood Frenzy?
Two options: Use Chilling Scream (E) to manually exit Blood Frenzy — channel and release to knock enemies away and reposition. Alternatively, hard crowd control (stuns, roots, suppressions) from enemy champions will briefly interrupt the frenzy. Displacement effects work best as they move Briar away from the target, breaking the auto-targeting loop and giving you time to re-evaluate the fight.
What does Briar's R (Certain Death) do exactly?
Briar kicks her pillory's hemolith gem toward a target direction. If it hits an enemy champion, Briar destroys her pillory and dashes directly to them — ignoring all terrain. On arrival she creates an explosion fearing all non-targeted nearby enemies. She then enters Hematomania — a supercharged Blood Frenzy that adds bonus armor, MR, lifesteal and movement speed, lasting until either Briar or the marked target dies. There is no exit from Hematomania except death.
What is Briar's best build in Patch 26.15?
For jungle in Patch 26.15: Sundered Sky → Plated Steelcaps → Stridebreaker → Sterak's Gage → Jak'Sho → Warmog's/GA. Runes: Conqueror (Keystone), Triumph, Legend: Tenacity, Last Stand — secondary Resolve with Bone Plating and Unflinching. This build maximizes her ability to dive targets, sustain through the bleed passive, and remain alive during Hematomania.
Who is Briar in League of Legends lore?
Briar is a failed experiment created by the Black Rose — a secretive Noxian organization led by LeBlanc. Her uncontrollable bloodlust required a pillory restraint device to keep her focused. After years in confinement, she broke free and now wanders Runeterra following her instincts for knowledge and blood, answerable to no one. Her origins and the Black Rose's intentions for her remain an open question in 2026 lore.
How many Briar skins are there in 2026?
As of July 2026, Briar has 6 skins: Original Briar, Street Demons Briar (Oct 2023), Anima Squad Briar (May 2024), Firecracker Briar (Jan 2024), Primordian Briar (Oct 2024), and Battle Academia Briar (Jan 2026) — the most recent, released in Patch 26.02 with full reworked animations, sounds and 8 chroma variants.
